Happiness by Geography

Greenwich and Liquidnet have produced some interesting research that takes a different view of the global markets.

Surveying buyside traders they find that almost 3/4 of them enjoy their work as much as in 03 – with reduced enthusiasm from Asia and Canada compared to US and Europe (Asia 54% as happy, and Canada 63% as happy).

Asian traders also registered highest dissatisfaction – specifically with administration and declining sellside coverage, with nearly 50% of respondents finding their job more stressful than 5 yrs ago.

With only 10% in Europe and 0% in the US finding the job more stressful, the research concludes on that point that nothing relieves stress more than satisfaction and control. I suspect its more a case that nothing increases stress more than uncertainty; and with US and Europe now being more certain regarding market shape in their new regulatory frameworks, there is clearly less uncertainty there.

In Europe only 1/4 said they were happy about the growth of execution venues.

Overall 86% see their trading desks adding more value now than 3 yrs ago, and 12% the same value as previously.

  1. To offer a contrast from a sellside perspective to those happiness stats – in the week before I went on hols I had separate conversations with guys from separate sellside institutions that each resulted in their suggesting we pack in the day jobs and go do something more interesting together for a job instead.

This is clearly an entirely unscientific comparison with the above, and you’ll have to take my word that this wasn’t coaxed out of them or solicited in any way and that these offers/suggestions were genuine rather than the standard thoughts of the trader who says they want to be a teacher or carpenter or a lumberjack instead…..

When I digested those buyside stats I couldn’t help wondering if this showed that, at this point in time, buyside are generally enjoying their jobs more than sellside.

Of course the other thought I had once the full electronic trade lifecycle was covered by that trio (trading desk head, senior ecommerce, senior operations), was if serendipity was saying hello .. so to test that and the power of the blogsphere: if you’re a buyer, let me know 🙂

  2. Holky, having worked on the buyside & sellside I was always happier on the sellside!!!! Maybe that says more about me…. 😦

My general happiness with work tends to fluctuate just as the markets “used” to. Overall happy in this segment of the market but not so enamoured with the firm….so any offers?????
